2013 경기세계도자비엔날레를 기념하여 본 전시 ‘국제지명공모전’의 참여 작가인 오히 토시오(OHI Toshio)의 ‘현대다도시연’ 행사를 개최할 예정입니다. 전통적인 라쿠 도자기 기술을 이어가고 있는 일본 가나자와의 오히 가문 제11대 후손이기도 한 도예가 오히 토시오가 직접 진행하는 이번 행사는 중국과 한국을 거쳐 일본으로 전해진 전통 다도 및 도자문화의 역사에 대한 강연 및 다도시연이 펼쳐질 예정입니다. 차와 도자기의 역사적, 문화적 교류를 바탕으로 한 이번 행사를 통해 최근 한국과 일본 간의 정치적 갈등을 넘어서 좀 더 적극적인 문화예술교류에 이바지하는 기회가 마련되기를 기대합니다. 부디 참석하시어 자리를 빛내어 주시기 바랍니다. 감사합니다.

도자문화에 대한 관심을 높이고 미래의 관객과 애호가를 양성하고자 마련된
2013 경기세계도자비엔날레의 학술교육 프로그램입니다.
지난 2월, 전세계 작가들의 높은 호응 속에 참여작가 선정이 마감되었습니다만,
이후에도 많은 작가 여러분들이 본 행사의 참여에
지속적이고 적극적인 참여 의지를 보여주셨습니다.
그 성원에 힘입어, 경기세계도자비엔날레에서는
국내에서 활동하고 있는 더 많은 작가 여러분들이
“Talks by Artists”에 참여할 수 있도록 추가 공개모집을 실시하고자 합니다.

작가들의 자발적인 참여로 이루어지는 본 행사는
참여작가의 작품세계 및 도자관련 정보를 내용으로 하는
30분 내외의 짧은 강연 형태로 진행됩니다.
본 행사를 통해 작가 여러분들은 자신이 지닌 지식과 정보들을
전문가 및 일반 관객들과 함께 공유함으로써,
대중들에게 도자예술에 대한 이해를 돕는 안내자로서,
새로운 도자문화를 이끌어 가는 글로벌 리더로서 역할을 하게 될 것입니다.
이 행사를 통해 자신이 지닌 다양한 지식과 소중한 경험을 함께 나누며
도자를 사랑하는 사람들과 소통하고 싶은 작가 여러분들의 많은 참여를 기다립니다.

GICB 2013 Newsletter No.2 Topic / Community / People / Entry open for / GICB News   Topic                                                                                      Introducing Odysseus’s Close Friend, Mentor   Written by Misun Rheem / Guest Curator, GICB 2013 The story of Mentor in the Greek mythology happened a long time ago. It goes back to the time of the Trojan War when King Odysseus of Ithaca called for his close friend Mentor before leaving to fight. Mentor was summoned on a particular mission as King Odysseus was anxious about the  education of his son Telemachus. He took the occasion to ask Mentor to take charge of Telemachus’s education. King Odysseus was gone for longer than expected, and in the meantime Mentor became a  close friend and a teacher to Telemachus, training him to become a great leader. At times he took on the role of a strict father and at others, a guiding teacher. Despite the long duration of the war Mentor kept to his pace and became Telemachus’s spiritual supporter. Finally the war had ended and king Odysseus returned. He was surprised to see how his son had grown to be a fine person and he praised his friend Mentor for the achievement. Since then, people began to call wise and  experienced experts as ‘Mentors’, and this was the term given to those endeavoring to awaken hidden talents of others to fulfill their dreams. According to the English dictionary, the definition for ‘mentor’ refers to a person who offers constant advice through his or her expertise and experience. It refers to a ‘tutor’, advising ‘mentees’ with abundance of knowledge and wisdom on a one to one basis in order to develop abilities and hidden talents through a process known as ‘mentoring’. There was an article in the Korean newspaper at the end of 2012 stating that Korea’s largest bookstore surveyed to discover that the most popular keywords for a bestseller were ‘healing’ and ‘mentor’. These two words have become familiar in the Korean society and they are used not only in leading national newspapers but also in news broadcasting stations and even in entertainment  shows. This simply reflects on the increasing symptoms resulting from social and psychological instability and conflict. Recently there has been frequent mention of the rise in suicide and unemployment, while a decrease in birth rates and a great increase in the aging population are prevalent. Additionally such phenomena simply prove that the slow economical structure, the instable social psychology of the future is only heightening anxiety. Moreover, today the role of Mentor substituting the father, King Odysseus, has become something of an educational package for a new type of learning and this is spreading rapidly within today’s society despite the fact that parents are present right next to their children. Again as mentioned earlier, a mentor is someone who is experienced, a senior taking on the role of teaching young people in order to help them develop their abilities at the same time as enabling them to adapt to society through counseling and advising. Even so the conception of the mentor is strategically misused today. It has clearly become commercial, using it as part of a business plan by introducing holiday tours and leisure programs in addition to organizing mentoring and healing programs by study academies conducting one-off extra-curricular classes, enabling students to set their minds to effectively sit university entrance examinations. Yet in saying so, learning methods similar to mentoring/coaching can be found in the traditional Korean culture. Craft, art, music, dance, architecture, food and all other fields requiring a long period of technical training and acquired experience, were possible in the past through apprenticeship practiced by craftsmen. Therefore learning and asking seniors was an evident practice. Furthermore tasks like ‘hyang-ak (village code)' and ‘du-rae (farmers’ cooperative group)’, which simply could not be done individually, were resolved through collaborative cooperation. Amicable friendship was established through playful games such as the Korean traditional Gangkang-Suwollae (Korean hand-in-hand merry-go-round pastime pleasure), while also realizing the importance of community by enjoying and laughing together. In a period full of conflicts and crises such as the one today, it is important to collect the wisdom of the past in order to prepare ourselves for the future by collaborative co-living and developing, rather than competing against each other. Coincidentally, in June 2012 when discussions on the 2013, 7th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GICB 2013) exhibitions, symposium and other venues took place, among the many facts that were touched upon at the time, the main core conception evidently evolved around ‘healing’ and ‘mentoring’. Therefore, the workshop for the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, being the highlight of this event, acquired the titles <Healing Camp>   and <Mentoring Camp>. They reflect on the high expectation of the new ‘learning’ method and interest on ‘healing’. For the GICB 2013 workshop, internationally renowned and established artists participating in the International Prize of GICB 2013 (the main exhibition), will act as mentors to young artists selected through an international screening process. In the same way as King Odysseus left his son in ‘Mentor’s Camp’, the artists in the main exhibition will take part in the <Mentoring Camp> to be a friend, a counselor and a teacher to young artists. In addition to this, the general public participating in the <Healing Camp> will also be guided by experts and through the creating process that clay offers, they will learn to release stress, develop positive thoughts and become motivated, while experiencing a healing session. Keep posted with our developments as GICB 2013 will offer this special gift called ‘THE PRESENT (NOW)’ for everyone to have a good time in a period where we have become so accustomed to a society that is ill, one that needs constant ‘healing’. Community                                                                                National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA)   Written by Hyeyoung Cho               / Managing Director for International Exchange, GICB 2013 Come March time every year and all attention is given to the annual conference organized by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) in the United States. This particular council operates through a membership program connecting people related to ceramics. The members consist of ceramists, educators, students, art-lovers, gallery owners, museum curators, ceramic suppliers and many more eligible for becoming a member. This year the conference took place in Houston, Texas, USA under the title of “EARTH/ENERGY”. Evidently many ceramists and experts from the United States attended along with a huge international crowd consisting of ceramists, educators and gallery owners all taking part in a number of venues organized by the council - exhibitions, lectures, seminars, forum and other venues. The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts was first founded in 1966 as a non-profit ceramic education foundation. The original year for its founding was actually in 1961 and it was an affiliated organization to the American Ceramic Society, and in 1966 it became an independent organization. The objective of this council is to introduce innovative ideas solely for ceramics in order to establish its own identity and also to follow the tendencies in this particular field. At the beginning members consisted mainly of ceramists and educators. In 2001, attempts to expand the membership categories were implemented to accommodate more ceramics related experts. Currently there are approximately 4,000 members including those in the United States and the world in general. NCECA’s mission statement is as follows: "The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts is a dynamic organization that fosters global education and appreciation for the ceramic arts. NCECA’s programs, exhibitions, publications, opportunities and resources inspire advancement of the field." (Quote from the NCECA webpage, http://nceca.net/static/about.php) The aim of NCECA is to promote people in the ceramics field by operating a ceramic community. There are scholarship programs for young artists, residency programs and other events for ceramists to build and develop their career. NCECA also has a close networking system with other major ceramic organizations around the world and therefore operates an outreach program for artists to expand their horizons internationally. Since 2001, the NCECA office has been established in Erie, Colorado. The NCECA staff - executive director, conference manager, office manager, projects manager, webmaster and bookkeeper - operates from this base. The conference that is organized every year is the largest and the most important event organized by NCECA. It takes place in different locations around the United States. The venues comprise of academic events such as symposium, seminars, forums and exhibitions, and also trade stands. For the symposium the latest issues and trends in ceramics and art are discussed. The exhibitions divide largely into 6 sections – invitational exhibition, undergraduate-gradate competitions, promotional exhibition of new talents, NCECA members’ exhibition and bi-annual international exhibition in the biennale format. Furthermore, there are trade stands on show during the entire period that the conference takes place. NCECA is probably the most active ceramic organization in the world and its operation has been effective in building a ceramic community. We hope that the annual conference will also take place in other locations outside of the United States. If this happens then maybe one day there will be a chance for the Korea Ceramic Foundation to organize a joint conference to help promote contemporary Korean ceramics and also the world in general. Furthermore living in this period of fast changes, our current conditions do not enable us to think about life introspection nor spiritual healing. Although society has advanced considerably with the introduction of the internet and developments in the IT industry, and through them we have been able to obtain a diverse range of culture and information, yet at the same time we have become exposed to social issues that we initially ignored to overlook. For example, although the SNS system allows communication to be easier and faster, in reality there is only one person in existence, communicating with the world. Therefore the standard of communication has become limited to one person. So in order to live effectively and wisely in such a social condition, the 2013, 7th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale has organized an “International Ceramic Workshop” with the title “Mentoring Camp”. This venue is organized to set a new paradigm by inviting distinguished artists from around the world in addition to new artists, while also inviting local regional artists for an open exchange and creative experimentation to actively implement collaborative working methods. The “Mentoring Camp” is in three parts: Mentoring Camp I - “Short-term Residency and Forum Workshop” Mentoring Camp II - “Korean Aesthetics and Spirit embedded in Clay” Mentoring Camp III - Communicating with the Local Icheon Pottery Studios. In total there are 4 venues and they involve the participation of artists from the main exhibition, International Prize of GICB 2013, in addition to international committee members, past Grand Prize Award winners, distinguished Korean artists and Icheon potters. The GICB 2013 would like to take this opportunity to introduce two artists participating in the “Mentoring Camp”. Aikyu HAHN (Korean Ceramist, born in 1953) Korean female clay artist Aikyu Hahn enjoys challenging herself with the notion of “motion in stillness” and instead of emphasizing simplified aesthetics, she expresses this notion through her abstraction of human figures. By this it does not mean she is presenting immoveable poses but rather she is expressing different concentrated emotions experienced through her lifetime in the belief that motherly love is the warmest kind of love originating from human instincts. Therefore in her terracotta clay work, it is possible to sense a genuine voice, that of a female and a mother. The bodily movements signify sacrifice and labor which she herself has contributed to the community known as ‘family’. In it there is a kind of ‘fantasia’ that generates belief and courage. She has refined diversities in life with her endless emotional transitions and expectations and she has depicted them through warm and soft organic lines, in addition to using stable shapes. For the GICB 2013 International Ceramic Workshop, Aikyu Hahn will focus on establishing a community and seeking for personal identity, simultaneously as studying the relationship between these two subjects. The experience of working together with an artist who is industrious, dedicated, structured and genuine will definitely awaken young artists, to reflect on their own selves. Aikyu HAHN, a Korean ceramist, graduated from the Seoul National University, Department of Applied Arts in 1977, and received MFA in Ceramics at the same university in 1980. She also studied at the University of Arts, Angoulème, France in 1983. She held many solo exhibitions including <In Ruins> at ARTSIDE Gallery, Beijing (2010); <Incounter> at POSCO Art Museum, Seoul (2009); <People Bearing Flowers> at Gana Art Center, Seoul (2008). She also joined the <Clay, the Material Imagination> at Kim Chong Yung Museum, Seoul (2007), and “Pre-International Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale” at Incheon Culture & Arts Center (2007). Han Aikyu is presently the director in charge of design at Gonggan Ceramic Company. Kukuli Velarde (Peruvian Ceramist/US Citizen, born in 1962) A Peruvian artist with an American citizenship, Kukuli Verlarde strives to confront many different subjects through her clay work. Her focus is mainly on the history of Peru, the notion of migration, colonization, religion, feminine issues and more. Her main interests evolve around the above subjects and issues, which becomes the basis to her clay. She states that, “clay is an expressive vehicle for projecting the modern society”, and she works to create her “own culture”, often as someone who is a part of the complex international cultural flow, and at others as an artist, concerned about her own time, social background and regional identity. Especially because Kukuli Verlarde has created her own perspective when it comes to her own experience, as she lives in a different place to her country of birth and consequently she has established a community that is entirely her own and it is true to state that she co-exists with all those differences. For the artist Peru is the artistic resource and inspiration, and she creates her work while striving to combine the Peruvian qualities with today’s modern society. For the GICB 2013, there are artists who have dual nationalities therefore they are often not residing in the country of their birth place. Through the workshop Kukuli Verlarde will address such issues, about differentiating cultures and finding one’s own identity despite cultural gaps, differences and so on. The Korea Ceramic Foundation is certainly proud to be working with a special artist in the likes of Kukuli Verlarde. Kukuli Velarde, a Peruvian artist with American citizenship, received her BFA (Magna Cum Laude.) from Hunter College, the City University of New York in 1992. She was given the “Transformation Award” from Leeway Foundation, Philadelphia in 2011, the “USA (United States Artists) Knight Fellow”, Santa Monica in 2009, and nominated for grants of Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, New York in 2009. Kukuli has held solo shows at Galeria German Kruger Espantoso, Peru in 2012, at Barry Friedman Ltd., New York in 2010, and at Garth Clark Gallery, New York in 2007, titled <Plunder Me, Baby>. The venue “Talks by Artists” received countless applications and only by the end of March, GICB 2013 was able to select the final speakers. Since this is a lecture venue the context of the talks were taken into serious consideration. The final selection of speakers comprised of 20 nationalities including Korea, the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Central America, Africa and so on. GICB 2013 Newsletter No.2 이달의 화제 / 커뮤니티 / 비엔날레 사람들 / 공개모집 & 참여신청 / 비엔날레 뉴스     이달의 화제 오디세우스의 절친,  멘토 Mentor   글 / GICB 2013 객원큐레이터 임미선   멘토는 고대 그리스 신화에 등장하는 인물로, 그에 관한 이야기는 다음과 같이 시작된다. 이타카(Ithaca)의 왕인 오디세우스(Odysseus)가 트로이(Trojan) 전쟁에 나가기 전, 자신의 가장 절친한 친구인 멘토(Mentor)에게 아들 텔레마커스(Telemachus)의 교육을 맡아줄 것을 부탁하였다. 이에 멘토는 예상과 다르게 길어지는 전쟁에도 불구하고 어린 왕자가 훌륭한 리더가 될 수 있도록 그의 다정한 친구이자 스승으로, 그리고 때로는 엄격한 아버지의 역할을 대신하면서 오랜 기간 동안 왕자의 정신적 지주가 되어 주었다. 마침내 전쟁을 마치고 돌아온 왕, 오디세우스는 놀라울 정도로 훌륭하게 성장한 자신의 아들을 보면서 그동안 왕자를 훈육시킨 친구, 멘토를 크게 칭찬하였다고 한다. 이후 사람들은 경험이 많은 사람으로서 상대방의 잠재력을 파악하고 그가 자신의 꿈과 비전을 이룰 수 있도록 도와주는 스승이며, 인생의 안내자를 멘토라고 부르기 시작했다.     사전에 따르면, 경험 없는 사람 또는 조력을 받는 사람에게 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 조언과 도움을 주는 유경험자 또는 선배를 멘토(Mentor)라고 한다. 그리고 경험과 지식이 풍부한 멘토가 조언을 구하는 멘티(Mentee)를 일대일로 지도하면서 실력과 잠재력을 개발시키는 것을 멘토링(mentoring)이라고 한다.   지난해 말, 교보문고에서 베스트셀러들의 키워드로 뽑은 단어가 ‘힐링(Healing)’과 ‘멘토(Mentor)’였다는 기사를 읽은 적이 있다. 베스트셀러가 아니더라도 각종 신문기사나 텔레비전 뉴스, 심지어 예능프로그램의 제목까지 ‘힐링’과 ‘멘토링’은 우리들에게 매우 친숙한 단어가 되어있다. 그만큼 사회적, 심리적 불안과 갈등의 징후가 높다는 의미에서 시사하는 바가 크다. 이는 최근 자주 언급되고 있는 높은 자살률과 실업률, 낮은 출산율과 급속한 노령화 그리고 이에 따른 저성장 경제구조 등으로 미래사회에 대한 사람들의 불안감이 한층 고조되고 있음을 보여준다. 또한 전쟁나간 아버지 오디세우스를 대신했던 멘토의 역할은 부모가 가까이 있음에도 불구하고 마치 새로운 교육 상품처럼 만들어져 유행처럼 확산되고 있다. 멘토라 함은 연륜 있는 선배가 경험이 부족한 어린 후배들의 능률과 사회 적응력을 높이기 위해 조언자 또는 상담자의 역할을 하는 존재이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 최근의 멘토링, 힐링 체험은 학원특강이나 입시과외, 명사들의 일회성 강연이벤트 및 휴양을 빙자한 관광오락프로그램 등 비즈니스 차원에서 점점 더 전략적으로 상업화되어가고 있다.   한편, 멘토링/코칭 같은 교육방식은 우리의 전통문화에서도 찾아볼 수 있다. 공예, 미술, 음악, 춤, 건축, 음식 등 오랜 경험과 숙련된 기술 및 노하우를 요구하는 모든 분야는 장인(Craftsman)들에 의한 도제식(Apprenticeship) 교육을 통해 이루어졌다. 따라서 선배들에게 묻고 배우는 것은 당연한 일이었다. 또한 향약이나 두레 같은 공동체 협업을 통해 도저히 혼자서는 감당할 수 없는 일들을 해결하기도 했다. 강강수월래 같은 놀이를 통해서는 함께 웃고 즐기며 관계를 만들고, 공동체 의식을 쌓아갔다. 오늘날 같은 갈등과 위기의 시대, 경쟁보다는 협업(Collaboration)을 통해 상생발전 할 수 있는 과거의 지혜를 모아 미래준비에 힘쓰는 것은 어떨까하고 생각해 본다.   공교롭게도 지난해 6월, 2013 경기세계도자비엔날레의 전시학술행사를 구성하면서 논의했던 여러 내용가운데 ‘힐링’과 ‘멘토’는 단연 핵심적이었다. 이에 비엔날레의 하이라이트인 워크숍의 제목을 <힐링캠프(healing camp)>와 <멘토링캠프(mentoring camp)>로 정하였다. ‘치유’에 대한 관심과 새로운 ‘교육’ 방식에 거는 우리들의 높은 기대를 반영한 것이다. 이번 워크숍에는 본 전시에 참여하는 세계 각국의 중견작가들이 국제공모를 통해 선발된 신인작가들의 멘토 역할을 담당한다. 오디세우스가 전쟁터로 나가며 아들을 ‘멘토의 캠프’에 맡겼던 것처럼 선배작가들은 <멘토링캠프>에 참여하는 후배작가들의 친구로서, 상담자로서 그리고 스승으로서 함께하는 시간을 마련한다. 또한 <힐링캠프>에 참가하는 관람객들은 멘토인 이들 전문가들의 가이드 아래 흙을 만지며 쌓인 스트레스를 발산하면서 긍정적, 능동적 에너지를 되찾는 ‘힐링’의 시간을 갖게 될 것이다. ‘치유(Healing)’해야 하는 불편한 그리고 병든 사회에 살고 있는 오늘의 우리들에게 보다 즐겁고 유익한 ‘현재(Present)’라는 선물을 GICB 2013의 멘토들과 모두 함께 준비하고 있다.   기대하시라!      커뮤니티  미국 도자예술교육협의회 (NCECA)     글 / GICB 2013 국제협력 매니저 조혜영   매년 3월이면 어김없이 전 세계 도예가들의 시선이 미국 도자예술교육협의회 (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, NCECA)에서 개최하는 학회에 집중된다. 이 학회는 도예와 관련된 모든 분야의 사람들이 회원으로 활동하고 있는데, 도예 작가뿐만 아니라 교육자, 학생, 미술애호가, 갤러리 운영자, 박물관 큐레이터들과 도자 재료상을 운영하는 사람들까지도 회원 자격으로 활동에 참여하고 있다. 올 해의 NCECA 학회는 “점토/에너지(EARTH/ENERGY)”라는 주제로 미국 텍사스주 휴스턴에서 열렸다. 미국전역에 있는 도예가는 물론이고 전세계의 도예가, 교육자, 갤러리 전문가들이 참석하여 전시, 강연, 세미나, 포럼 등의 다채로운 행사들이 함께 개최되었다.   미국 도자예술교육협의회는 1966년에 조성된 비영리 도자교육재단이다. 창립시기는 1961년으로 볼 수 있으나 처음 단체가 만들어 졌을 당시에는 미국도자협회(American Ceramic Society)의 부속 단체로 만들어졌으나, 1966년에 분리되어 현재의 도자예술교육협의회가 되었다. 단체가 만들어진 목적은 도자분야의 혁신적인 발전을 위해 도자분야만의 정체성을 찾고, 지속적으로 분야의 흐름을 정립해나가기 위하여 지원 프로그램을 통해 분야의 발전을 꾀하는데 있다. 회원은 도자분야의 저변에 속해있는 교육자와 작가들이었으며 2001년을 기점으로 좀더 영역을 확장하여 도자와 관련된 모든 분야를 포괄하고 있다. 현재는 전 세계적으로 약 4000여명의 회원을 확보하고 있다.   NCECA가 목표하는 바는 다음과 같다:   “미국 도자예술교육협의회는 도자예술 교육의 발전을 꾀하고 도자예술의 저변을 넓히는 활동을 하는 단체이다. 도자예술에 관한 학술 프로그램, 전시, 출판 등으로 작가들을 지원하고, 작가활동의 기회를 넓히는 부분에 노력을 기울이고 있다.” 미국 도자예술교육협의회는 도자 커뮤니티를 운영하며 도자분야에 종속하고 있는 사람들을 도와주는 역할을 하고 있다. 장학금 제도를 통해 젊은 작가들을 지원하고 있으며 레지던시 프로그램과 연계해서 작가들이 활동의 영역을 확대할 수 있도록 도자관련 기관과 상호 네트워킹을 하고 있다. 2001년부터는 콜로라도 이리(Colorado, Erie)에 본부를 두고 있는 이 단체는 회원들에 의해 선정된 운영위원들이 중요한 업무를 담당하는 형식으로 운영되고 있으며, 매년 개최되는 학회는 이 단체의 가장 큰 업무라고 할 수 있다. 본부는 미국 내에서 학회가 열릴 지역과 장소를 선정하고 전시 및 학술회의의 주제를 선정한다.   학회의 성격은 크게 학술적인 부분과 전시로 나누어지며 박람회 형식으로 다양한 도자 관련기관을 소개하는 공간으로 이루어지고 있다. 미국 도자예술교육협의회의 학술회의는 도자와 미술분야에서 이슈화 되고 있는 화두를 논의하며 비판하는 장이다. 그리고 전시는 크게 6개로 나누어지는데 초대작가 전시, 대학-대학원 학생들을 위한 공모전시, 떠오르는 작가들을 후원해주는 전시, 회원들로 이루어지는 전시, 국제적인 회원들 중심으로 2년에 한 번씩 개최되는 도자 비엔날레전시, 이외에 학회 기간 동안 임대부스에서 개별적으로 개최되는 작은 규모의 전시들이 있다.   미국 도자예술교육협의회는 세계에서 가장 활발하게 활동하고 있는 큰 단체 중 하나이며, 효과적으로 운영되고 있는 도자관련 기관이자 커뮤니티라고 할 수 있다. 앞으로는 매년 개최하는 학회를 미국 전역 뿐만 아니라 전 세계에 있는 도자기관과 협력하여 개최할 수 3월 19일~22일 주 제: 재료의 세상 (Material World) 전 시: 초대전 “Flow: The 2014 NCECA Invitational “      비엔날레 사람들   한애규 / 쿠쿨리 벨라드Kukuli VELARDE   글 / GICB 2013 어시스턴트 큐레이터 김정신     현대는 치열한 경쟁사회이며 그로 인한 우리는 개인적 상실감이 심화될 수 있는 사회적 문제에 노출되어 있다. 또한 빠르게 변해가는 속도의 시대를 살아가면서 우리들에게 필요한 삶의 성찰이나 마음의 치유를 생각하지 못하는 것이 작금의 모습이다. 인터넷과 IT 산업의 발달로 인해 사회는 더욱 발전했지만 그 속에서 다양한 문화와 정보를 획득하는 한편 그 이면에는 간과할 수 없는 이러한 사회적 문제들이 도출되고 있다. 한 예로 SNS는 소통의 방법을 보다 쉽고 빠르게 만들어 주었지만 정작 소통을 하는 공간 안에는 나 혼자만 존재함으로써 세상과 소통하는 기준을 개인으로 한정 짓게 만들었다. 이러한 현대사회를 현명하게 살아가는 방법을 모색하기 위하여 2013 제7회 경기세계도자비엔날레에서는 열린 공간에서의 자유로운 소통을 기반으로 하는 “국제도자워크숍 멘토링캠프”를 준비하고 있다.   국제도자워크숍 멘토링캠프는 세계 각국의 중견 및 신예작가, 그리고 지역의 전문 도예가들이 한 자리에 모여 창의적인 실험과 자유로운 교류 및 협력을 활성화함으로써 경기세계도자비엔날레의 새로운 패러다임을 만들어 나가기 위한 새로운 시도이다. 이 행사는 멘토링캠프 Ⅰ(단기레지던시, 포럼워크숍), 멘토링캠프 Ⅱ(흙으로 빚은 한국의 전통미학), 멘토링캠프 Ⅲ(지역명장과 함께 하는 홈스테이) 등 서로 다른 3개의 멘토링 프로젝트와 워크숍 이벤트 등 총 4개의 프로그램으로 구성되어 있으며, 본전시 참여 작가와 비엔날레 기획 및 운영에 중요한 역할을 담당했던 국제위원 및 국제공모전 역대 대상수상 작가, 한국도자의 역사와 미학을 전해줄 수 있는 특별 초대작가들이 멘토로 참여한다. 이번 호에서는 새롭게 달라지는 2013 제7회 경기세계도자비엔날레의 하이라이트가 될 국제도자워크숍 멘토링캠프에 참여하는 멘토 작가들 중에서 주목할 작가를 소개하고자 한다.   한애규 (한국, 1953)   한국의 여성 도자조각가 한애규가 보여주는 것은 단순한 미를 추구하는 인체가 아니라 정중동(靜中動)의 모습이다. 부동의 자세가 아닌 일생동안 겪어 온 인간의 여러 감정들이 농축되어 있기 때문에 작가가 보여주는 몸짓들은 가장 따뜻한 사랑인 모성을 기본원리로 하고 있다. 또한 우리는 자연을 잉태하고 있는 흙이라는 소재를 통한 테라코타에서 여성으로서 어머니로서 들려주는 작가의 진솔한 목소리를 들을 수 있다. 작가의 몸짓은 가정이라는 공동체 안에서 자신의 희생과 노력들이 묻어 있으며 나아가 세상을 살아가는 신념과 용기를 주는 하나의 판타지다. 작품에서 오는 따스함은 부드럽고 유기적인 선, 안정적인 형태와 만나 작가의 끊임없는 내면의 움직임과 삶에 대한 기대 등 인생의 여러 가지 면모들을 잘 가다듬고 있다.   자신의 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 이번 국제도자워크숍 멘토링캠프에서 한애규 작가는 그녀의 푸근하고 따뜻한 테라코타 작품들을 배경으로 공동체 안에서의 자신의 정체성에 대한 탐구와 그 관계에 대해 고민하는 작가들과 함께 상생하는 삶의 방법을 공유할 것이다.       한애규는 서울대에서 학사(1997)와 석사(1980) 학위를 취득하였으며, 6년 뒤 프랑스 앙글렘 미술대학을 졸업하였다. 그녀는 베이징 아트사이드 갤러리에서의 <폐허>(2010), 포스코 미술관에서의 <조우>(2009), 서울 가나 아트센터에서 열린 <꽃을 든 사람>(2008) 등을 포함한 수 많은 개인전을 개최하였다. 또한 2007년에는 서울 김종영 미술관에서 열린 <흙, 물질적 상상>과 인천종합문화예술회관에서 열린 “국제인천여성미술비엔날레”에 참여한 바 있다. 현재, ㈜공간세라믹에서 디자인 감독으로 활동 중이다.   쿠쿨리 벨라드Kukuli VELARDE (페루/미국, 1962)   미국 국적의 페루 출신 작가인 쿠쿨리 벨라드는 현대미술 안에서 페루의 역사, 이주, 식민지, 종교, 여성문제 등에 대한 주요 양상을 소재로 작업하는 작가이다. “점토는 현대라는 사회를 투영하기 위한 표현의 수단“이라고 말하는 이 작가는 복잡한 국제문화의 흐름 속 한 구성원으로서 그리고 예술가로서 자신의 속해 있는 시대와 사회적 배경 그리고 지역에 대한 정체성을 고민하고 성찰하여 ‘자신의 문화’를 만들어 간다. 특히 자신의 국적과 살고 있는 지역 그리고 주변 환경과 개인의 경험 등 다양한 커뮤니티들에 속해있는 자신을 바라보며 자신만의 지닌 차별성을 발견함으로써 그 안에서 공존하고 있는 자신의 모습을 확인하고 있는 것이다. 작가에게 페루는 예술의 원천이다. 그것을 잃어버리지 않고 현재 사회의 카테고리 안에서 그녀만의 작품을 재창조하고 있는 것이다.   이번 비엔날레에는 쿠쿨리처럼 이중 국적을 지녔거나 원래 있던 지역을 떠나 다른 지역에서 살고 있는 이주자 출신의 작가들이 많이 참여한다. 쿠쿨리는 멘토링캠프를 통해서 여러 문화가 융합되어 있는 사회에서 어떻게 자신이 지닌 정체성을 유지하면서 이들과 어울려 살아가고 있는지, 그리고 그 안에서 느꼈던 차이와 차별들을 어떻게 풀어가며 이를 작품에 담았는지에 대한 그녀의 값진 경험을 공유할 것이다.   쿠쿨리 벨라드는 미국 뉴욕 헌터대학을 우수한 성적으로 졸업(1992)하고, 사회변화에 공헌하는 작업을 하는 작가에게 수여하는 리웨이재단의 ‘변화상’(2011)과 ‘미국예술가상’을 수상(2009)하였다. 페루소재 독일 크루거 에스판토소 갤러리, 뉴욕 베리 프라이드만, 가스 클락 갤러리 등에서 다수의 개인전을 개최하였고, 2003년부터 2004년까지 독일 프랑크푸르트 응용미술관(MAK)과 미국 뉴욕 아트앤디자인 미술관, 그리고 시카고 아테네움 건축디자인 박물관에서 열렸던 순회전 <형태와 내용: 신체의 아이덴티티-바디랭귀지>에도 참여하였다.   국제도자워크숍 멘토링캠프는 본전시 참여 작가와 공개 공모를 통해 선정된 신예 작가, 그리고 지역의 전문 도예가들이 참여하는 전문가 프로그램이다. 현재 한국도자재단 홈페이지를 통해서 2013 제7회 경기세계도자비엔날레 국제도자워크숍 멘토링캠프의 첫 번째 프로젝트인 ‘단기레지던시’에 참여할 작가(멘티)를 모집하고 있다. 한애규 작가나 쿠쿨리 벨라드 작가 이외에도 일본, 중국, 호주, 미국, 캐나다, 나이지리아 등 전 세계에서 초청된 본전시 작가들이 멘토 작가로서 참여한다. 멘토들은 젊은 Accepting Voluntary Mentees to work with Renowned International Artists as Mentors The 7th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2013 (GICB 2013) hopes to experiment with new and innovative ideas in ceramics by inviting well known artists around the world to support their creative activities simultaneously as developing the ceramic community of Icheon by collaborating with the local artists through the <International Ceramic Workshop: MENTORING CAMP>. In doing so it hopes to remain true to the main theme of GICB 2013 which is 'Community, With Me, With You, With Us'. It is an opportunity to motivate creative exchange through workshops taking place on the site and also an initiative to set a new educational paradigm for the GICB 2013. The first venue for the MENTORING CAMP is the <Short-Term Residency>. The invited artist, namely the mentor, and young mentees assemble as a group to conduct reciprocal mentoring sessions. The mentor will share with the mentees knowledge on ceramics, specialized experiences in the field in addition to exchanging information. The objective is for both the mentor and the mentee to learn from each other. Furthermore, it will be a great opportunity for establishing international network. The GICB 2013 once again opens its arena to the world to receive young artists who wish to participate as mentees in the MENTORING CAMP venue. 이달의 화제 / Topic                                                                          혼자 부르는 “독창”이 아닌 “합창”으로 만드는 공동체    글 / 조혜영(GICB 2013 국제협력 매니저)   문명의 발달과 사회적 변화가 가속화되는 가운데 사람들의 공동체는 끊임없이 적응하며   그 속에서 함께 살아갈 수 있는 방안을 모색해 왔다. 때때로 요행히 적절한 해결책을   제시하기도 하고, 변화가 가져오는 불안정성으로 엄청난 혼란의 시기를 맞기도 한다.       올해로 12년을 맞는 경기세계도자비엔날레가 말하고자 하는 것은 무엇인가?   그 주제가 공동체인 만큼 처음부터 비엔날레의 모든 주요행사를 담당하고 있는 GICB 2013   서울사무소는 내부에서부터 먼저 단단한 공동체를 이루는 것이 목표이다.   함께 일을 한다는 것은 한 사람의 목소리에  좌지우지되기 보다는 서로가 가진 각기 다른   재능과 능력이 모여 조화를 이루고 아름다운 결과를 만들어 내는 것이 중요하다고 생각한다.   또한 비엔날레가 성공적으로 개최되기 위해서는 적어도 2년이라는 시간이 필요하다.   하지만 번번이 비엔날레 개최 1년 전쯤 운영팀이 결성되고 그때부터 각종 업무가 시작된다.   단기간에 결성되어 짧은 기간 내에 정해진 결과를 만들어 내어야 하기 때문에 조직의   갈 길이 결코 순탄하지는 않다. 과정이야 어떻든 비엔날레는 개최되도록 되어있다.   2013년 비엔날레 실무팀도 결코 예외는 아니지만 구성된 인력을 살펴보면 여느 해에 비해   흥미로운 부분이 있다. 감독으로 선정된 홍익대학교 도예유리과 이인진 교수는 12년의   비엔날레가 진행되는 동안 다양한 역할로 비엔날레에 참여 했었던 분으로 때로는 작가로,   심사위원으로, 운영위원으로 등등 비엔날레가 요구하는 모든 역할을 한 번씩 경험한   산 증인이다. 게스트 큐레이터인 임미선 전 김해 클레이아크(Gimhae Clayarch) 미술관장은   경기세계도자비엔날레가 설립되던 해부터 전시팀의 멤버로 다년간 전시를 담당해 왔던   까닭에 다른 사람들보다 비엔날레에 대한 감회가 남다르고 애착이 많을 것으로 생각된다.   국제운영위원으로 선정된 국내외인사들 역시 지금까지 다양한 역할로 비엔날레와의   관계성을 유지해 왔다. 이렇게 다양한 분야에서 전문성을 띤 인력들이 2013년 비엔날레를   위해 결집했다.   지금까지 두 차례의 국제회의와 두 개의 인터넷 공모, 셀 수 없을 만큼 많은 공문과   회의 등으로 팀이 하나의 공동체가 되었다. 국제위원들도 적극적으로 도움을 주고 있다.   화려하지는 않지만 알찬 공동체로 한국을 빛내는 실속 있는 비엔날레, 보이지 않는 곳에서   내실이 돋보이는 내용으로 행사의 품격을 한 차원 올려보는 것은 어떨까? 올해 영국에서는   1월부터 3개의 도자중심 비엔날레가 개최되는데, 그 중 영국왕립학교(Royal College of Art)   에서 주관한 학술비엔날레(Research Biennale)는 올해로 두 번째를 맞이한다.   큰 규모는 아니지만 소규모로 진정한 전문가들이 모여 내실 있는 면모로 비엔날레의 수준을   한 차원 높인 학술행사로 평가되고 있다. 이번 행사에서 우리의 과제는 이미 국제도자행사로   그 입지를 공고히 쌓아 놓은 경기세계도자비엔날레에 더욱 내실을 담아 단단하게 만드는   것이고, 나아가 바깥으로 알리고 반향을 이끌어 내는 일이다. 우리는 우리가 공동체가 되고   또 더 큰 공동체를 담는 그릇이 되어 이번 경기세계도자비엔날레를 새로운 패러다임으로   승화시키고 더 많은 공감대를 만들어 내는데 초점을 두고자 한다.     Not a Solo, but a Choir of Singers   Written by Hyeyong Cho (Directing Manager, GICB 2013 International Correspondence)   We are living in an era where people are becoming more and more isolated from   each other. The discovery of the computer and the mobile phone has definitely put   our life at ease but we are loosing the most essential part of civilization and that is   learning to live together. An increasing number of people today are texting messages   rather than speaking with their voices and tactile greetings are no longer necessary   when it only takes a minute to communicate with someone in Chile through the   internet. The Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GICB 2013) is reaching its 12th   year and it is reflecting on the past to prepare for this year's events. The subject matter   for this forthcoming GICB 2013 is "Community - with me, with you, with us" and the   main operating body decided that it needs to consolidate an effective working force   in order to accomplish a successful biennale. In actual fact the preparation of a huge   event such as this takes more than a year but the operating body of staff members is   only set a year before the event takes place. Each time there is a new creative director,   a guest curator and staff in charge of various different venues associated with the   biennale. It is like a new start each time the event takes place.   This time the staff assembled to organize the GICB 2013 is unique as the creative   director, Professor Inchin Lee (Department of Ceramics and Glass, Hongik University)   has built a versatile experience from all perspectives with the Gyeonggi International   Biennale. He participated as an artist,  jury member, committee member and   a advisory member. Who can be more capable than Professor Inchin Lee after having   taken such wide variety of roles. Also the guest curator of exhibitions, the former   director of the Gimhae Clayarch Museum, Misun Rheem, worked for the Gyeonggi   Biennale from the time it was first founded. Her return brings back many unforgettable   memories no doubt.   Already the staff are working hard on all the venues for the GICB 2013. There has been   two meetings for the international committee members, numerous amount of emails   being send both in and out, documents being written, paper work and more.   Also appreciations goes out to the GICB 2013 international committee members for   their advice and help in all aspects of the preparation.   It is time that the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale focuses on elevating   the quality of the event. In the UK there are 3 international ceramic events taking place   this year with one of them organized by the Royal College of Art as a research biennale   on ceramics. This is most interesting as the time has come for such events to study the   essence and to advance forward by focusing on contents, conceptions and subject   matters. The same applies to the GICB 2013, we want to change the paradigm of the   biennale for it to share and develop together with the people of its region and   therefore contribute to Gyeonggi Province.   커뮤니티 / Community                                                                    아취브레이 재단   글 / 김진아(GICB 2013 어시스턴트 큐레이터)   아취브레이 재단은 도예인들에게 최상의 작업조건을 지원해줄 수 있는 레지던시 기관으로   널리 알려져 있다. 체재기간 중 거주 및 작업, 전시, 교류에 관한 모든 부분과 경제적인   부분까지 세심하게 지원되기 때문에 많은 도예가들이 꼭 한번쯤은 가보고 싶어 하는   레지던시 기관이기도 하다.   그렇다면 왜 아취브레이 재단은 공짜가 없는 세상에서 작가들에게 이러한 최상의 조건을   지원하는 것일까? 아취브레이 레지던시 프로그램의 진짜 목적은 무엇일까?   결론부터 말하자면, 아취브레이 재단은 재능 있는 작가들의 전문적인 발전을 지원함과   동시에 도자를 중심으로 하는 지역사회의 공동성 또는 연대성을 달성하고 지역의 발전을   도모하기 위해서 레지던시 프로그램을 운영한다는 것이다. 아취브레이 재단의 이러한   목적은 단순한 작가 레지던시 기관이 아니라 하나의 공동체로서 “진심으로 도자에 관심이   있는 사람들이 일하기 좋은 공간을 제공한다”는 공동의 목표를 이루기 위해 수립되었다고   할 수 있다.   그렇다면 아취브레이의 레지던시 작가들은 이 공동체에서 과연 어떤 역할을 하고 있는   것일까? 아취브레이 재단은 멤버십 제도로 운영된다. 공동체를 구성하는 지역 주민과   제휴 기관들은 기부금을 내거나 그들이 지닌 경영적 노하우를 제공함으로써 지역 내   도자문화를 활성화하려는 목적을 갖고 활동하고 있다. 그리고 레지던시 작가들은   그들이 지닌 창의적인 재능과 전문성을 바탕으로 지역민들을 위한 교육 사업을 지원하는,   중요한 또 하나의 구성원이 된다.   뿐만 아니라 미국 몬타나 주의 헬레나 지역이 도자를 통해 세계의 주목을 받을 수 있도록   하는 장본인이기도 하다. 아취브레이 재단은 이러한 지역공동체의 운영을 통해 도자,   그리고 도예작가들이 예술뿐만 아니라 지역사회를 기반으로 하는 시설의 경영, 그리고   지역 문화의 창출 등에 창조적인 역할을 할 수 있다는 것을 보여준다.   아취브레이 재단의 레지던시 프로그램은 Full time 레지던시와 두 개의 Short-term   레지던시로 구분된다. 접수 시에는 레지던시 신청서, 20개의 작품이미지, 작품정보, 이력,   추천서 등의 서류와 신청비 $35가 필요하다. 2013-2014년의 모든 레지던스 프로그램 접수는   온라인으로 받는다. 아취브레이 재단 홈페이지: http://www.archiebray.org/       Archiebray Foundation   Written by Jin-Ah Kim (Assistant Curator for the Special Exhibition, GICB 2013)   The Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale has over the years worked closely   with the Archiebray Foundation and for this month's newsletter, it is featuring this   particular ceramic community as part of the GICB 2013's theme,   "Community, with me with you with us".   The Archiebray foundation is known among ceramists as a haven for creating artworks   as the residency program accommodates expenses for creating clay work, exhibitions   while even providing financial support for daily expenses. In a world where nothing   is free the conditions set by this Foundation is rather generous, why then is it doing   this? What is the objective?   The Archiebray Foundation operates a ceramic residency program at the same time as   endeavoring to develop the regional society through ceramics and therefore   consolidating a community. The objective is to establish "a place to make available for   all who are seriously and sincerely interested in any of the branches of the ceramic   arts, a fine place to work."   So how do the ceramists in the residency program contribute to the community?   Their role is to share their skills and experiences with the regional society through   education and in doing so the people of Helena, Montana are able to learn more   about ceramics. The Archiebray Foundation operates a membership program consisting   mostly of corporations and organizations for fund donations while also receiving advice   in financial management and operation. It is a communal endeavor between the   ceramists, different groups and people, attracting the attention of the world through   ceramics in Helena, Montana.   The Archiebray Foundation operated two residency programs for ceramists.   One is a full-time program and the other is a short-term program. Compared to previous years more specifically 2011, the number   of members has reduced considerably but their responsibility has further increased in   all aspects of the planning. The organizing body for the Gyeonggi International Ceramic   Biennale (GICB 2013) is endeavoring to plan the venues in close collaboration with   the international committee members. In total there are 21 members from  8 different   countries and they were assembled together in May 2012 to contribute their expertise   in two different developments, one for exhibitions and academic programs,   and the other for administrative preparations.   Since May 2012, the international committee has been active. The members have   contributed their expertise in recommending artists for the main exhibition   (International Prize for GICB 2013), international promotion, advising venues for   academic programs and many more. Their participation in all aspects of the   organization of GICB 2013 has been most invaluable. This year more than ever   the contribution of the international committee is crucial for the overall development of   GICB 2013.   Until now there has been 2 meetings with the first taking place in June 2012 and   the occasion was used for setting the direction and the subject for GICB 2013.   The second meeting took place in January 2013 and this was specifically for studying   the selected artists for the main exhibition and also for screening applicants for   the HOT Rookies special exhibition. Furthermore the venues for GICB 2013 were   finalized in the second meeting. We are the ROOKIES!   Online entries for the "HOT Rookies" special exhibition was open between   December 3 and 19, 2012 and 486 people from 59 different countries applied.   The screening for the final 20 selection was competitive. It was conducted using an   online system following 3 consecutive stages.   On January 7, 2013 the final 20 artists from 8 different countries was announced.   The results are publicized on the Korea Ceramic Foundation webpage.   GICB 2013 is pleased to present the 20 young and creative new talents for   the forthcoming special exhibition opening on September 28, 2013.
