혼자 부르는 “독창”이 아닌 “합창”으로 만드는 공동체

문명의 발달과 사회적 변화가 가속화되는 가운데 사람들의 공동체는 끊임없이 적응하며
그 속에서 함께 살아갈 수 있는 방안을 모색해 왔다. 때때로 요행히 적절한 해결책을
제시하기도 하고, 변화가 가져오는 불안정성으로 엄청난 혼란의 시기를 맞기도 한다.
올해로 12년을 맞는 경기세계도자비엔날레가 말하고자 하는 것은 무엇인가?
그 주제가 공동체인 만큼 처음부터 비엔날레의 모든 주요행사를 담당하고 있는 GICB 2013
서울사무소는 내부에서부터 먼저 단단한 공동체를 이루는 것이 목표이다.
함께 일을 한다는 것은 한 사람의 목소리에 좌지우지되기 보다는 서로가 가진 각기 다른
재능과 능력이 모여 조화를 이루고 아름다운 결과를 만들어 내는 것이 중요하다고 생각한다.
또한 비엔날레가 성공적으로 개최되기 위해서는 적어도 2년이라는 시간이 필요하다.
하지만 번번이 비엔날레 개최 1년 전쯤 운영팀이 결성되고 그때부터 각종 업무가 시작된다.
단기간에 결성되어 짧은 기간 내에 정해진 결과를 만들어 내어야 하기 때문에 조직의
갈 길이 결코 순탄하지는 않다. 과정이야 어떻든 비엔날레는 개최되도록 되어있다.
2013년 비엔날레 실무팀도 결코 예외는 아니지만 구성된 인력을 살펴보면 여느 해에 비해
흥미로운 부분이 있다. 감독으로 선정된 홍익대학교 도예유리과 이인진 교수는 12년의
비엔날레가 진행되는 동안 다양한 역할로 비엔날레에 참여 했었던 분으로 때로는 작가로,
심사위원으로, 운영위원으로 등등 비엔날레가 요구하는 모든 역할을 한 번씩 경험한
산 증인이다. 게스트 큐레이터인 임미선 전 김해 클레이아크(Gimhae Clayarch) 미술관장은
경기세계도자비엔날레가 설립되던 해부터 전시팀의 멤버로 다년간 전시를 담당해 왔던
까닭에 다른 사람들보다 비엔날레에 대한 감회가 남다르고 애착이 많을 것으로 생각된다.
국제운영위원으로 선정된 국내외인사들 역시 지금까지 다양한 역할로 비엔날레와의
관계성을 유지해 왔다. 이렇게 다양한 분야에서 전문성을 띤 인력들이 2013년 비엔날레를
위해 결집했다.
지금까지 두 차례의 국제회의와 두 개의 인터넷 공모, 셀 수 없을 만큼 많은 공문과
회의 등으로 팀이 하나의 공동체가 되었다. 국제위원들도 적극적으로 도움을 주고 있다.
화려하지는 않지만 알찬 공동체로 한국을 빛내는 실속 있는 비엔날레, 보이지 않는 곳에서
내실이 돋보이는 내용으로 행사의 품격을 한 차원 올려보는 것은 어떨까? 올해 영국에서는
1월부터 3개의 도자중심 비엔날레가 개최되는데, 그 중 영국왕립학교(Royal College of Art)
에서 주관한 학술비엔날레(Research Biennale)는 올해로 두 번째를 맞이한다.
큰 규모는 아니지만 소규모로 진정한 전문가들이 모여 내실 있는 면모로 비엔날레의 수준을
한 차원 높인 학술행사로 평가되고 있다. 이번 행사에서 우리의 과제는 이미 국제도자행사로
그 입지를 공고히 쌓아 놓은 경기세계도자비엔날레에 더욱 내실을 담아 단단하게 만드는
것이고, 나아가 바깥으로 알리고 반향을 이끌어 내는 일이다. 우리는 우리가 공동체가 되고
또 더 큰 공동체를 담는 그릇이 되어 이번 경기세계도자비엔날레를 새로운 패러다임으로
승화시키고 더 많은 공감대를 만들어 내는데 초점을 두고자 한다.
Not a Solo, but a Choir of Singers

We are living in an era where people are becoming more and more isolated from
each other. The discovery of the computer and the mobile phone has definitely put
our life at ease but we are loosing the most essential part of civilization and that is
learning to live together. An increasing number of people today are texting messages
rather than speaking with their voices and tactile greetings are no longer necessary
when it only takes a minute to communicate with someone in Chile through the
internet. The Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (GICB 2013) is reaching its 12th
year and it is reflecting on the past to prepare for this year's events. The subject matter
for this forthcoming GICB 2013 is "Community - with me, with you, with us" and the
main operating body decided that it needs to consolidate an effective working force
in order to accomplish a successful biennale. In actual fact the preparation of a huge
event such as this takes more than a year but the operating body of staff members is
only set a year before the event takes place. Each time there is a new creative director,
a guest curator and staff in charge of various different venues associated with the
biennale. It is like a new start each time the event takes place.
This time the staff assembled to organize the GICB 2013 is unique as the creative
director, Professor Inchin Lee (Department of Ceramics and Glass, Hongik University)
has built a versatile experience from all perspectives with the Gyeonggi International
Biennale. He participated as an artist, jury member, committee member and
a advisory member. Who can be more capable than Professor Inchin Lee after having
taken such wide variety of roles. Also the guest curator of exhibitions, the former
director of the Gimhae Clayarch Museum, Misun Rheem, worked for the Gyeonggi
Biennale from the time it was first founded. Her return brings back many unforgettable
memories no doubt.
Already the staff are working hard on all the venues for the GICB 2013. There has been
two meetings for the international committee members, numerous amount of emails
being send both in and out, documents being written, paper work and more.
Also appreciations goes out to the GICB 2013 international committee members for
their advice and help in all aspects of the preparation.
It is time that the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale focuses on elevating
the quality of the event. In the UK there are 3 international ceramic events taking place
this year with one of them organized by the Royal College of Art as a research biennale
on ceramics. This is most interesting as the time has come for such events to study the
essence and to advance forward by focusing on contents, conceptions and subject
matters. The same applies to the GICB 2013, we want to change the paradigm of the
biennale for it to share and develop together with the people of its region and
therefore contribute to Gyeonggi Province.
아취브레이 재단

아취브레이 재단은 도예인들에게 최상의 작업조건을 지원해줄 수 있는 레지던시 기관으로
널리 알려져 있다. 체재기간 중 거주 및 작업, 전시, 교류에 관한 모든 부분과 경제적인
부분까지 세심하게 지원되기 때문에 많은 도예가들이 꼭 한번쯤은 가보고 싶어 하는
레지던시 기관이기도 하다.
그렇다면 왜 아취브레이 재단은 공짜가 없는 세상에서 작가들에게 이러한 최상의 조건을
지원하는 것일까? 아취브레이 레지던시 프로그램의 진짜 목적은 무엇일까?
결론부터 말하자면, 아취브레이 재단은 재능 있는 작가들의 전문적인 발전을 지원함과
동시에 도자를 중심으로 하는 지역사회의 공동성 또는 연대성을 달성하고 지역의 발전을
도모하기 위해서 레지던시 프로그램을 운영한다는 것이다. 아취브레이 재단의 이러한
목적은 단순한 작가 레지던시 기관이 아니라 하나의 공동체로서 “진심으로 도자에 관심이
있는 사람들이 일하기 좋은 공간을 제공한다”는 공동의 목표를 이루기 위해 수립되었다고
할 수 있다.
그렇다면 아취브레이의 레지던시 작가들은 이 공동체에서 과연 어떤 역할을 하고 있는
것일까? 아취브레이 재단은 멤버십 제도로 운영된다. 공동체를 구성하는 지역 주민과
제휴 기관들은 기부금을 내거나 그들이 지닌 경영적 노하우를 제공함으로써 지역 내
도자문화를 활성화하려는 목적을 갖고 활동하고 있다. 그리고 레지던시 작가들은
그들이 지닌 창의적인 재능과 전문성을 바탕으로 지역민들을 위한 교육 사업을 지원하는,
중요한 또 하나의 구성원이 된다.
뿐만 아니라 미국 몬타나 주의 헬레나 지역이 도자를 통해 세계의 주목을 받을 수 있도록
하는 장본인이기도 하다. 아취브레이 재단은 이러한 지역공동체의 운영을 통해 도자,
그리고 도예작가들이 예술뿐만 아니라 지역사회를 기반으로 하는 시설의 경영, 그리고
지역 문화의 창출 등에 창조적인 역할을 할 수 있다는 것을 보여준다.
아취브레이 재단의 레지던시 프로그램은 Full time 레지던시와 두 개의 Short-term
레지던시로 구분된다. 접수 시에는 레지던시 신청서, 20개의 작품이미지, 작품정보, 이력,
추천서 등의 서류와 신청비 $35가 필요하다. 2013-2014년의 모든 레지던스 프로그램 접수는

Archiebray Foundation

The Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale has over the years worked closely
with the Archiebray Foundation and for this month's newsletter, it is featuring this
particular ceramic community as part of the GICB 2013's theme,
"Community, with me with you with us".
The Archiebray foundation is known among ceramists as a haven for creating artworks
as the residency program accommodates expenses for creating clay work, exhibitions
while even providing financial support for daily expenses. In a world where nothing
is free the conditions set by this Foundation is rather generous, why then is it doing
this? What is the objective?
The Archiebray Foundation operates a ceramic residency program at the same time as
endeavoring to develop the regional society through ceramics and therefore
consolidating a community. The objective is to establish "a place to make available for
all who are seriously and sincerely interested in any of the branches of the ceramic
arts, a fine place to work."
So how do the ceramists in the residency program contribute to the community?
Their role is to share their skills and experiences with the regional society through
education and in doing so the people of Helena, Montana are able to learn more
about ceramics. The Archiebray Foundation operates a membership program consisting
mostly of corporations and organizations for fund donations while also receiving advice
in financial management and operation. It is a communal endeavor between the
ceramists, different groups and people, attracting the attention of the world through
ceramics in Helena, Montana.
The Archiebray Foundation operated two residency programs for ceramists.
One is a full-time program and the other is a short-term program. In order to apply
you need to complete the application form, submit 20 images of artworks, description
on artworks, resume, letter of recommendation and a submission fee of 35 US Dollars.
They are currently receiving online applications for the 2013-2014 residency programs.

2013년 제7회 경기세계도자비엔날레 국제실행위원회

한국도자재단에서는 2013년 제7회 경기세계도자비엔날레를 성공적으로 개최하기 위해
작년 5월 GICB 2013 국제실행위원회를 위촉하였다. 본 위원회는 전 세계 8개국 21명으로
구성되어 있으며, 이전 비엔날레의 자문위원회 역할을 강화하고, 위원들의 적극적 참여를
이끌어내어 제7회 경기세계도자비엔날레를 함께 기획하고 만들어나가는데 그 목적이 있다.
또한 2011년 국제실행위원회의 규모를 대폭 축소하고 전시학술분과와 행사분과로 나누어
운영함으로써 보다 집중된 전문가들의 의견을 듣고자 하였다.
전시학술분과는 비엔날레의 전시학술 전반에 대한 자문을 담당하는데, 본전시 작가추천,
해외홍보를 위한 국제협력관계 지원, 프로그램 별 기획에 대한 자문 등을 주로 하는 반면,
행사분과는 비엔날레 전체 행사에서 전시학술을 제외한 부대전시, 이벤트, 홍보, 행사운영
부분에 대한 기획 지원 및 자문을 담당한다.
2012년 6월, 제1차 국제실행위원회에서는 모든 분과 위원이 참석하여 비엔날레 주제와
프로그램 기본구상(안) 등을 검토하였고, 2013년 1월 제2차 국제실행위원회에서는
전시학술부문 위원들만 참석하여 본전시 작가 최종검토, 특별전(HOT Rookies) 심사,
세부프로그램 기획 자문 등 프로그램 실행에 앞서 함께 점검하는 자리를 가졌다.

About the International Committee
for the 7th Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2013

The Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale has specialized the roles of the
international committee members this year in order to achieve a successful outcome
with the 2013 venues. Compared to previous years more specifically 2011, the number
of members has reduced considerably but their responsibility has further increased in
all aspects of the planning. The organizing body for the Gyeonggi International Ceramic
Biennale (GICB 2013) is endeavoring to plan the venues in close collaboration with
the international committee members. In total there are 21 members from 8 different
countries and they were assembled together in May 2012 to contribute their expertise
in two different developments, one for exhibitions and academic programs,
and the other for administrative preparations.
Since May 2012, the international committee has been active. The members have
contributed their expertise in recommending artists for the main exhibition
(International Prize for GICB 2013), international promotion, advising venues for
academic programs and many more. Their participation in all aspects of the
organization of GICB 2013 has been most invaluable. This year more than ever
the contribution of the international committee is crucial for the overall development of
GICB 2013.
Until now there has been 2 meetings with the first taking place in June 2012 and
the occasion was used for setting the direction and the subject for GICB 2013.
The second meeting took place in January 2013 and this was specifically for studying
the selected artists for the main exhibition and also for screening applicants for
the HOT Rookies special exhibition. Furthermore the venues for GICB 2013 were
finalized in the second meeting. The participation of the international committee
members has proven to be notably effective and GICB 2013 will continue to work
closely with them until the opening in September 2013.

International Ceramic Workshop
Entry open for artists to become "mentees" for "Mentoring Camp"
The "Mentoring Camp" for GICB 2013 International Ceramic Workshop is organized in
conjunction with the main exhibition and it is an opportunity to learn from established
artists in the field of contemporary ceramics through a mentoring program.
Information and knowledge on ceramics is shared and further developed to set the
future objective in contemporary ceramics. Entries are open for anyone interested in
becoming a mentee for this venue, a chance to speak and discuss with well known
artists.

지난 2012년 12월 3일부터 12월 19일까지 실시했던 특별전 HOT Rookies 참여작가
온라인 공개모집에 전 세계 59개국 486명의 작가들이 참여를 신청하였습니다.
그리고 치열하고 열띤 1,2,3차의 온라인 심사를 거쳐
2013년 1월 7일 특별전 HOT Rookies에 참여하게 될 전 세계 8개국 20명의 작가가
최종 선정되어 재단 홈페이지 및 선정 작가의 이메일로 공지되었습니다.
20명의 개성 넘치는 젊은 작가들은 오는 9월 28일부터 경기도 이천 세라믹스창조센터
제1, 2전시장에서 ‘역설의 미학’이라는 주제 아래 20개의 다양한 스토리를 공개할
예정입니다.
We are HOT! We are the ROOKIES!
Online entries for the "HOT Rookies" special exhibition was open between
December 3 and 19, 2012 and 486 people from 59 different countries applied.
The screening for the final 20 selection was competitive. It was conducted using an
online system following 3 consecutive stages.
On January 7, 2013 the final 20 artists from 8 different countries was announced.
The results are publicized on the Korea Ceramic Foundation webpage.
GICB 2013 is pleased to present the 20 young and creative new talents for
the forthcoming special exhibition opening on September 28, 2013. The exhibition will
take place at the Icheon CeraMix Creative Center Halls 1 and 2 under the theme of
"Paradoxical Aesthetics".
